Donate Life, Hope & Research

Apr 1, 2023

Colleen Cares made a donation to this wonderful charity.

National Donate Life Month (NDLM) was established by Donate Life America (DLA) and its partnering organizations in 2003. Observed in April each year, National Donate Life Month helps raise awareness about donation, honor and celebrate the generosity of those who have donated, recognize medical teams for their hard work and to encourage more Americans to register their desire now to be a donor at the end of their life.

One donor can save up to eight lives, restore sight to two people through cornea donation, and heal more than 75 lives through tissue donation.

Not all donated organs, eyes, and tissues are able to be used for transplant however may be used for medical research and education if the donor (or family, if there is not a donor registration) authorizes it. Non-transplantable organs, eyes and tissues help save and heal lives by allowing researchers to find new ways to treat disease.

More than 100,000 people are waiting for a lifesaving transplant; of these, more than 4,000 are waiting for a new heart. Transplants rely on the generosity of organ, eye and tissue donors, and there are not enough donors to meet the need.

The Gleason family will be forever grateful for the donors and their families that made the excruciatingly painful decision that gave Colleen the gift of life at age 3 and 20. Because of these donors, we were able to have the true blessing and gift of Colleen for 27 years. Please, if you are still not a donor, become one (National Donate Life Registry). You could help another family receive the gift of life.

Colleen Cares champions the Donate Life cause. Learn more about their work and the donation process at donatelife.net. Each state has a coalition of donation and transplantation organizations that work together; in Illinois you can learn more at donatelifeillinois.org.
